Fauna Forest Ecology can survey for otters. In order for development to take place, otter surveys must be conducted if there is a likely chance they are present or use habitat at the development site. Otters can potentially be found in all types of wetland habitats, including marshes, rivers, streams, lakes and ditches. Otters can also be found along coastal regions and harbour mouths. A variety of habitats may be incorporated into their fairly large home ranges.
Otter surveys must be carried out at or within a close proximity of any water bodies prior to any work taking place. Fauna Forest Ecology can conduct relevant surveys, produce reports and give compensation/mitigation advice, and assist with the application of development licences.

Otters are strictly protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) and by the EC Habitats Directive, transposed into domestic law through the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 (as amended). Under the Habitats Regulations otters are classed as a European protected species and therefore given the highest level of protection. Additional protection is also provided by the Countryside and Rights of Way (CRoW) Act (2000). Otters are also listed as a priority species on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP).

The legislation makes it an offence to:

  • Kill, injure or disturb an otter
  • Destroy any place used for rest or shelter by an otter
