Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

Phase-1 Habitat Surveys

Phase-1 Habitat Surveys are undertaken at the development site. By conducting this type of survey, we can record habitat and the potential ecological impact development might have on both wildlife and flora. The need for further protected species surveys can often be determined by conducting Phase-1 habitat surveys.
We structure our phase-1 surveys to follow Natural England's published procedure. Our surveys give both the client and consultant an insight of further ecological requirements, moving forward. All phase-1 habitat appraisals include mapping of habitats using standard codes, detailing target notes for features of interest, colour photos and a Phase-1 Habitat Survey report.

This survey can be carried out any time of year, however identifying flora during the spring and summer months is easier.

In summary Fauna Forest Ecology can arrange:

  • Mitigation and compensation design.
  • On-site and off-site mitigation works. The complete mitigation package, including vegetation clearance, animal fence erection, animal trap installation, species translocation and on-going habitat maintenance and management.
  • On-site and off-site compensation works, including habitat creation.
  • Construction programming.
  • Method statements for site contractors.
  • Tool box talks with site contractors

Extended Phase-1 surveys

Phase-1 Habitat Surveys are undertaken at the development site. By conducting this type of survey, we can record habitat and the potential ecological impact development might have on both wildlife and flora. The need for further protected species surveys can often be determined by conducting Phase-1 habitat surveys.
In order to comply with wildlife legislation and planning policy objectives, an Extended Phase-1 survey is required. A high-level scoping survey is carried out to highlight habitats that could potentially support legally protected species.

Fauna Forest Ecology performs a desk study as part of our Phase-1 surveys. We include biological records data (BRD) from the local records centre. By conducting this search, we are able to identify protected wildlife or plants in the local area.
