Fauna Forest Ecology Ltd can survey for water voles as part of a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal. We can design a compensation or mitigation strategy to ensure your development plans run smooth and lawfully with minimal interruptions.
Surveys are conducted between March and September. During a water vole survey, we inspect for D-shaped burrows, footprints, gnawing on roots and tubers, droppings, feeding stations, burrows, pat latrines and lawns.

There are 4 species of vole in the UK - the water vole is the largest.
They primarily feed on plants and grass by the water's edge. They also feed on fruit, twigs, bulbs and buds.

Water voles are fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act
1981 (as amended) and are a UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) priority species. Intentional killing, capture or injury and intentional or reckless disturbance, obstruction, damage or destruction or their burrows is illegal.
